Juliet is sitting at her desk. She rubs at her sore neck and peers out into the darkness beyond her window. It's well past infirmary closing hours, but she needed very badly to finish this inventory. They're running low on supplies again.

She leans back in her chair and rubs her eyes, sighing.

Rose makes her way across the barracks. From her house, she had seen the light on in the infirmary, letting her know Jack or Juliet was still there. She knocks on the door and then pokes her head in.

Jack? Juliet?
Juliet hears the voice calling out and leans back in her seat.

In my office, Rose!
Rose enters and goes to Juliet's office. She steps in a bit hesitantly.

Now what are you doing here so late?
She runs a hand through her hair and smiles, albeit tiredly.

Just running through our inventory. We're running low on the basics.

What's up?
Well, I saw your light was on so I thought I'd stop by...

I think I might be getting a cold. Normally it wouldn't bother me but...I don't have anything to take at home.
Oh dear. Okay, well, let's go to the exam room. Follow me.

Juliet leads her to the exam room and pats the bed with her hand, motioning for Rose to sit there. Juliet pulls on some gloves and rummages through the supplies.

What are your symptoms, and when did they start?
Oh, a day or two ago I guess.

Sore throat, bit of a cough, achy and tired.
Hmmm.

Juliet examines the inside of Rose's throat, gets her to breathe as she listens, all routine doctor examinations. She pulls off her stethoscope and feels Rose's forehead before taking her temperature. She tsks softly.

You have a very slight fever, which means this seems more flu-like to me. But let's hope it's not!

Do you have lots of juice at home? Lots of liquids?

She rummages in her cupboards as she speaks.
Flu, hmm? I haven't had that in years...

All the water I want. And I think I have some orange juice concentrate in the freezer. That'll work, right?
Perfect. Maybe see if you can get some chicken broth too. You'll need to stay hydrated, but see how much you can eat. Nice soft foods. There are some protein powders for shakes in the caf, those would be perfect.

I'm going to give you this box of Tylenol cold and flu medicine. You're in the early stages and if we can curtail it before we need to bring in the big guns, I would rather do that.
Rose smiles.

Thanks, Juliet. I didn't think people got sick here much on the Island, but I suppose the usual cold and flu here and there isn't much.

These were just what I was looking for.
We don't typically. Sometimes colds are dragged in on the sub, but... the Island usually heals us nice and quick.

And I'm glad I could help! How have you been, besides the cold?
Oh, fine. It's been rather quiet around here, hasn't it? Or did I miss something?
Oh, fairly quiet, I suppose. Besides Charlie and Claire's wedding. You were there, right?
Yes, I was there. I don't know how that Smoke Monster gets off thinking he can interrupt their wedding! The poor things...
He's an asshole.

She cringes at her language.

Sorry.

It was so much easier when he couldn't get in here.
He's been getting in since I was here.

It makes me wonder what he'd do if he COULDN'T get in.
Probably storm around tearing up trees, run headlong into the sonic fence a few times. The usual. The guy can be surprisingly passive aggressive.
He's uh...something else. I'll always hate him for taking John's form. That poor man.
I know. The Monster can be cruel in who he chooses to appear as. But taking John Locke's body... seemed like a mockery, didn't it?

It's unfair.
There were times I had issues with the way John Locke chose to do things. But...he was a good man and believed in this Island. It's one thing we shared. If he knew a man was using his form to try and destroy the Island...

Rose shakes her head.
He'd be horrified.

Problem is, the Monster doesn't care about that. Or about us.

It's almost sad, Rose. I can almost understand it. When you live for so long, what do the insignificant lives of other people mean to you? It's like he's a different species entirely. He can't relate to any of us at all.

I'd feel bad if I didn't dislike him so much.
Yeah, I guess living for thousands of years here would be enough to make anyone apathetic. I guess everyone has their reasons for the way they are. It's only most of us don't take it out on others by killing them.
Typically not.

She leans against the counter.

He better learn to control himself, considering we know how to get rid of him now.
Do you really think that would be worth it?

Rose gives a small cough, covering her mouth.

So many people have returned here after they...well, after we thought they were gone for good. What's to stop him from doing the same? And it sounds so dangerous, the way it must be done...
